Bachelor of Commerce (Part-Time/Full-Time)

Introduction

The Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree programme was first introduced in Singapore in 1985 by Curtin University of Technology, Australia, in association with the Marketing Institute of Singapore, the first to do so in Southeast Asia.

These programmes are designed to provide professional expertise in the area of marketing as well as a range of other skills which will equip and prepare graduates for future managerial roles. They are relevant to the requirements of today’s global economy, with considerable emphasis on decision making, on trends in technology and associated work patterns, and other appropriate aspects of management in the highly competitive business arena. Besides theoretical concepts, the programme also emphasises the application of knowledge to commerce and industry.

This Bachelor of Commerce is a fully accredited Australian undergraduate degree and undergraduates undertaking this degree in Singapore will be awarded the Bachelor of Commerce degree, which is identical to the one awarded to full-time students at the Perth campus.

MIS students enrolled in the Curtin programmes study the same modules and use the same Curtin materials as students undertaking the course on campus in Australia . They also undertake the same examinations and are assessed against the same levels of performance.

Programme Objective

Marketing

The Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) is a single major designed to prepare students to organise and control marketing activities efficiently in a highly competitive and volatile environment. The emphasis in this major is on marketing planning and strategy formulation, so students are encouraged to develop:

  • A working knowledge of the frames of reference, models, concepts and language of marketing management and marketing information systems.
  • Awareness of concepts useful to marketing analysis and decisions drawn from the fields of behavioural science, quantitative techniques, economics and finance.
  • Understanding of the role of product, place, promotion and price in marketing, planning and strategy formulation, and familiarity with computer software, including the use of statistical packages for analysis of market data.
  • Skills in presenting oral and written reports
  • Creative and innovative thinking applied to complex situations
  • Practical insight through experience under actual market conditions.
Marketing & Advertising

The Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing & Advertising) is a double major designed to provide students with an understanding of the principles and processes of advertising and other forms of marketing communications, from a marketing perspective. This sets the pathway for students inspiring to seek careers in the advertising and media fields. The emphasis in this major is on marketing planning and strategy formulation, including strategies for advertising and Integrated Marketing Communications, so students are encouraged to develop:

  • A working knowledge of the frames of reference, models, concepts and language of marketing management and marketing information systems.
  • Awareness of concepts useful to marketing analysis and decisions drawn from the fields of behavioural science, quantitative techniques, electronic commerce, economics and finance.
  • Understanding of the role of product, place, promotion and price in marketing, planning and strategy formulation, and familiarity with computer software, including the use of statistical packages for analysis of market data.
  • Skills in presenting oral and written reports.
  • Creative and innovative thinking applied to complex situations.
  • Practical insight through experience under actual market conditions.
  • A thorough understanding of the practice and principles of contemporary global advertising from an Integrated Marketing Communications perspective.

This program is accredited by the International Advertising Association (IAA) - one of the leading global organisations in its field with members in 93 countries and 61 chapters worldwide.

Marketing & Public Relations

The Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing & Public Relations) is a double major designed to give graduates the ability to define a career that stays in front of emerging market trends. Students study the principles and processes of marketing and public relations, to meet the increasing workplace demand for an understanding of both disciplines. Students in this double major are expected to develop:

  • Awareness of the concepts useful to marketing analysis and decisions drawn from the fields of behavioral science, quantitative techniques, economics and finance.
  • An understanding of the communication process and to develop strategies, to ensure that any form of communication is clear, honest and unambiguous so that the messages are easily understood by the respective target audiences.
  • Understanding of the role of product, place, promotion and price in marketing, planning and strategy formulation, and familiarity with computer software including the use of statistical packages for analysis of market data.
  • Skills in presenting oral and written reports.
  • Creative and innovative thinking applied to complex situations.
  • Practical insights through experience under actual market conditions

This program is accredited by the Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA) is the sole body dedicated to enhancing the stature public relations professionals throughout the country.

Finance & Marketing

The Bachelor of Commerce (Finance & Marketing) is a double major designed for students who are seeking careers in both finance and marketing. Employment opportunities are available in government and non government organisations which include commercial and investment banks, regulatory bodies, stock exchanges, insurance companies and large public corporations. Students in this double major are expected to develop:

  • Understanding of the concepts of risk and return and how to apply these to investment and financing decisions.
  • Awareness and understanding of various financial markets and instruments.
  • Understanding of financial statements of corporations and how to interpret them.
  • Identification and control of financial risks in a corporation.
  • A working knowledge of the frames of reference, models, concepts and language of marketing management and marketing information systems.
  • Awareness of concepts useful to marketing analysis and decisions drawn from the fields of behavioural science, quantitative techniques, economics and finance.
  • Understanding of the role of product, place, promotion and price in marketing, planning and strategy formulation, and familiarity with computer software, including the use of statistical packages for analysis of market data.

Management & Marketing

The Bachelor of Commerce (Management & Marketing) is a double major designed to develop strengths in two complementary but distinct areas, thus enriching employment opportunities and enabling the development of understanding of a variety of multi-cultural perspectives. Graduates are employed in a wide variety of organisations in both public and private sectors. Students in this double major are expected to develop:

  • A working knowledge of the frames of reference, models, concepts and language of marketing management and marketing information systems.
  • Awareness of the concepts useful to marketing analysis and decisions drawn from the fields of behavioral science, quantitative techniques, economics and finance.
  • Understanding of the role of product, place, promotion and price in marketing, planning and strategy formulation, and familiarity with computer software including the use of statistical packages for analysis of market data.

  • Creative and innovative thinking applied to complex situations.

Accounting & Finance

The Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting & Finance) is a double major designed for students who wish to become professional accountants and to specialise in corporate and institutional finance. The course is designed to satisfy the educational and membership requirements of the Australian Society of Practicing Accountants (ASCPA).
This double major targets students wishing to specialise in corporate and institutional finance. Students study accounting units such as accounting practice, business law, auditing, taxation and financial management and also gain a broad understanding of the structure and operations of financial markets in Australia, together with the theory and techniques underlying financial management.

Programme Structure & Curriculum

The programme is offered on a part-time and full-time basis. There are three trimesters per academic year:

  • Trimester 1A - March to June
  • Trimester 2A - August to November
  • Trimester 3A - December to February

The length of study period depends on both the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) granted and the student’s pace. Minimum period of study is 16 months, with 12 module exemptions.

The Bachelor of Commerce programmes comprises a total of 24 units each.

This programme involves lectures, group discussions, case studies and presentations by students. Weekly lectures/tutorials are conducted by qualified and experienced local lecturers approved by Curtin University of Technology. There will be a total of 24 contact hours of local lectures for each module. Supporting the weekly lectures/tutorials are the intensive seminars, conducted by Curtin lecturers. There will be a total of 12 contact hours of intensive seminars for each module.

Examinations & Assessment

All students are required to sit for a written examination for all modules at the end of each semester. Students must fulfil the attendance requirement of at least 75% for each module before they are considered eligible to take the end-of-semester examinations.

The candidate will be allowed to sit for the supplementary examination(s) for the module(s) that they have failed in the main examination. However, a supplementary examination fee of S$53.50 (incl. 7% GST) per module is applicable.

To repeat a failed module, a student must attend classes and pay the module fee before he/she is considered eligible to take the examinations.

A student may only re-enrol any module twice. However, a student must complete the BCom programme within five years of registration, which is from the commencement of the first semester.

Curtin’s policy on assessment is continuous assessment through written assignments, special projects, and an end of semester examination. This policy ensures an objective, fair and balanced monitoring of students’ progress and attainment of a level of competence acceptable for the award of a degree.

Award of Certificate

Students who have completed all necessary course works, successfully passed all required modules and met all financial obligations to the institute and the Curtin University of Technology shall be awarded the Bachelor of Commerce by the Curtin University of Technology and be allowed to use the designatory letters “BCom” after their name.

Entry Requirements

Applicants with the following qualifications may be exempted from the first year of study or more:

  • MIS Diploma in Sales and Marketing, OR
  • MIS Diploma in Marketing Management AND Advanced Diploma in Marketing Management, OR
  • Business or related Diploma from Singapore Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic or Nanyang Polytechnic or equivalent, OR
  • Singapore Institute of Management Diploma in Management Studies, OR
  • Singapore Human Resources Institute Diploma in Human Resource Management, OR
  • Singapore Institute of Materials Management Diploma in Materials Management, OR
  • Chartered Institute of Marketing Diploma in Marketing (certificate + diploma), OR
  • NPB/PSB Advanced Diploma and Diploma in Business Administration

Students who possess either at least two GCE 'A' level passes (minimum 5 points*) or equivalent, or a three-year full time diploma in a non-business related study from the Polytechnic institutions. All other qualifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Non-Business diploma holders from the local polytechnics are eligible for exemptions of up to four modules. Please refer to the institute for exemptions given.

GCE 'A' level holders or equivalent will not be eligible for any exemption and will undertake the full programme consisting of 24 modules.

 

English Languague Requirements

All applicants will be required to demonstrate competence in English. Qualifications which are accepted as satisfying the Curtin University’s English requirement will include the following:

  • GCE English Language ‘O’ Level with grade C or better
  • GCE English Language ‘A’ Level with grade E or better
  • GCE General Paper with grade C or better
  • International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS) – An overall band of 6.0 with a minimum band of 6.0 for writing, 6.0 for speaking, 5.5 for listening and 5.5 for reading
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 550. Other English qualifications will be assessed on a case of case basis.
  • MIS English Preparatory Programme Level 1 to 4.

Curtin University of Technology reserves the right to change the above requirements and selection at their sole discretion.

Course Fees

Payment is to be made before the start of each Trimester and the student pays only the fees for the number of modules that he/she has chosen to enroll for that particular Trimester.

  • Year 1 Modules: A$680.00 per module*
  • Year 2 & 3 Modules: A$1,310.00 per module*

* Course fees are subjected to change from time to time by Curtin University.

The module fees cover course materials and tuition by both local tutors and Curtin lecturers and DOES NOT include textbooks. The cost for the optional Study Tour in Perth, including the cost of the return air ticket to Perth, accommodation, food expenses and other related expenses, will be borne by the student.

Payment must be made in the form of an Australian bank draft, payable to Curtin University of Technology.

A non-refundable application processing fee of S$ 50.00 (subject to prevailing GST rates) is chargeable upon application and submission of documents.

MIS Membership

The Marketing Institute of Singapore is a professional body for sales and marketing practitioners. All successful applicants must be individual members of the Institute. The following discounted membership charges apply:

  • Entrance fee of S$53.50 (incl. 7% GST)
  • Annual Subscription fee of S$53.50 (incl. 7% GST)

Changes & Amendments

Curtin University of Technology and the Marketing Institute of Singapore reserve the right to vary, change and amend the module content, entry requirements, course fees, curriculum, examination rules and regulations, lecturers, lecture date, venue and other aspects of the course at any time prior to and during the running of the modules.

An applicant must complete the prescribed Curtin University application form and return it together with the following documents.

For Local Students:

  1. CERTIFIED TRUE COPIES of educational certificates may be made by your company or at Marketing Institute of Singapore , in which case, the originals must be presented for verification.
  2. Two passport-sized photographs.
  3. A crossed cheque of S$53.50 (incl. 7% GST) for the application processing fee (non-refundable) made payable to “MIS Training Centre”. Payment by Cash, NETS and credit cards are accepted at the institute.

  1. Two copies of the Full-Time Programme Application Form, Form 16 and Form V36 – duly completed and signed by applicant at the relevant sections (the first set of forms must be original. The second set may be photocopies of the original set).
  2. Four recent passport-sized photographs (colour / black & white);
  3. Applicant’s official birth certificate (original copy);
  4. Applicant’s certified / notarized copies of highest educational certificates and result transcripts; (original copy);
  5. Applicant’s parents’ employment letter (including position, salary and period of work). This document can be issued by the company which he/she works for. A English version must attached if the employment letter is not written in English; (This employment letter is needed for Visa required country only);
  6. Applicant’s Passport photocopy and Personal particular page of applicant’s travel document (photocopy);
  7. Documentary proof of financial ability at minimum of S$30,000 (ie, equal to RMB150,000 or R$750,000.00) for more than half a year in the form of bank statements / fixed deposit accounts / saving accounts (original copy). (Documentary proof of financial ability is needed for Visa required country only);
